Open Question: Strange bug in North Carolina?

We had just gotten back from a 1 hour drive from Raleigh NC, and my boyfriend noticed a strange bug in the grill. At first we thought this was a VERY large spider, because it had a very large abdomen, but upon further inspection it was an insect, having only 6 legs and having the three parts. (head thorax abdomen). It was about the length of my thumb, and the abdomen was at least an inch thick. It was a dull gray, with white spots around the sides of it. It had red "mustache" looking things, which I guess were feelers? And it had a gold shiny spot on its back. when we got it out of the grill, it flew away.
